Three or four times each semester, I help cook Friday night dinner for the Jewish organization on campus, because I get out of the dining hall every chance I can. I helped cook last Friday and we made delicious pesto pasta. The food doesn't have to be "Jewish" food. My cooking group usually ends up cooking pasta or some type of Mexican food. Because we're cool like that.
Although the meal isn't supposed to be Jewish, we do have to bake a Challah, which is a braided egg bread that is supposed to be eaten on Shabbat. I was in charge of the Challah, which was a little scary because if I messed up, I might be attached by everyone coming to dinner (because challah is
good). Luckly, the bread dough rose as it was supposed to. We put it in the oven a little behind schedule, be we were hoping everything would turn out.
A while later, I went to check on the challahs (we make two loaves). A word of advice. Bread? It rises. Therefore, do not put it on the top shelf in the oven. It may rise, rise, rise, up into the upper parts of the oven. We kind of ripped the challah out of the oven, and moved it over to the other oven. The top was sort of missing, but it would still taste okay.
Later, when the bread was done cooking, I went to take it out of the oven. Another word of advice. Pans that just came out of a 350degree oven? Are hot. So hot that, just because you cover your hand up with an oven mit, doesn't mean that you can just lean your arm into the side of the pan without burning yourself. I will take my own advice next time. This time though, I received two lovely little burns on my arm. They're a really pretty bright red color, and one of them is nice and blistery too! I guess that's why you're supposed to wear long sleeves when your'e cooking (or else just, you know, not touch burning hot pieces of metal).
